Janet Planet was filmed on location in central/western Massachussettes, creating a bounty of local places, natural color and atmosphere to incorporate into the look of the film. Janet’s house was a main character, an oddity built as 2 siloh structures connected through the middle, consisting of nested loft bedrooms and rarely a flat wall, that we retrofitted with period furniture and materials for the 1991 setting. The summer greens played a role in the color design, acting through the windows as rectangles of green intensity and reflecting light in various ways through the day - allowing us to play with colors that mingled with or countered the powerful greens, creating a dichotomy between lacy’s internal world at home and the big, green, open world of Western Mass.
